This is done by design actually since we can't detect if you have closed your browser/gone to a new web page by accident or on purpose, or if you have just lost your connection to the game. It seems unfair to punish people when we can't be sure that they are just quitting the game. I think just that you would have to reload the game is enough of a deterrent for people not to do this on purpose regularly.
