Bio: How to Write an Essay

Whether in high school or college, you're guaranteed to write an essay at least once during your school or academic career. This may sound like an enormous challenge at first, but don't panic: If you stick to the content points we've compiled for you below when writing your essay, you'll be able to accomplish this task hands down.

How to write an essay? The right outline for essays

Basically, in essay you deal critically with a topic that comes from the scientific, cultural or social sphere. An essay is not a scientific paper, but an argumentative defense of your personal point of view or thesis as an author in relation to the chosen topic. For this reason, you do not have to strictly adhere to the scientific methodology - unlike in scientific term papers, for example.

The introduction: How important the introduction is for your essay

Similar to the teaser in journalistic texts, the introduction of your essay is crucial for motivating the recipient to read through your argumentation. Therefore, focus on writing an appealing introduction to your essay.

To make the introduction successful, first justify the choice of your topic. It is best to refer to a current event or a recent study. Then you make an assertion that you will discuss in the further course of the essay. You will refer to this so-called thesis again and again in the following, it forms the red thread. Your main thesis should therefore be chosen very carefully.

A thesis is suitable for your essay if you can find enough arguments to support your claim. Ideally, you will also find counterarguments that you can refute with even more convincing pros.

Our tip: Take a piece of paper and a pencil and make a table in which you compare the pros and cons of your claim. If it is well filled and the arguments work in favor of your claim, you have found your main thesis. Next, create a rough outline for the structure of your essay.

The body: Correct structure of the main section

If you have taken this tip to heart, the most important part of your work is basically already done. After that, you only have to formulate your collected arguments in the main part. Ideally, build the main part as a climax, which means: start with the weaker points and finish with your strongest argument. Also, think of apt examples for each point of view listed - this will make your essay more convincing.

The general structure of the main body is simple. Each paragraph starts with a topic sentence, which is a thesis statement or one of your arguments. It is followed by "facts" and examples that reinforce your point of view. In addition, you have the chance to refute other views. You proceed in the same way with your further arguments.

The conclusion: How to write a successful conclusion for your essay

Finally, briefly summarize your argument in the conclusion. In your conclusion, refer back to the thesis statement from the introduction of your essay, restating it in different words. The correct choice of words for your main thesis depends on the chain of argumentation for the main part. You may have a slightly different perspective there than you described in your essay introduction.
